Possible Fix: Cannot access Copilot models in VS CodeProblem Likely Causes & Solutions1. Check Your Copilot Subscription / AccessCopilot features such as model selection depend on your Copilot plan and seat being active under the account you're signed in with.
2. Confirm You Are Signed Into GitHub Properly in VS CodeIf VS Code isn’t fully authenticated, Copilot may not load models:
This ensures both GitHub and Copilot extensions authenticate correctly. 3. Verify Copilot Extension & VS Code Setup
4. Check Model Availability StatusAt times, certain advanced Copilot models (like GPT-4 variants) require:
If your main account has an older plan (e.g., Free), some models won’t show. Final TipIf switching account lets you see models but the main account doesn’t, it almost always points to subscription/permissions differences between the accounts. If you want, paste your exact subscription type (Copilot Free/Pro/Team/Enterprise) and the error message you see — I can help troubleshoot further! |

Hi! This usually happens because GitHub Copilot is enabled on one GitHub account but not the other. Copilot access is tied to the GitHub account, not to VS Code or the repository. If Copilot works when you switch accounts in VS Code, that account has an active Copilot subscription. Your main account (where your repos are) likely does not. You don’t need to move your repositories or change emails. Log in to GitHub using your repo account and check Copilot status: If Copilot isn’t active: Enable the free trial or subscribe, or If you’re a student/teacher, apply for the GitHub Student Pack (Copilot is free) After enabling Copilot: Sign out of GitHub in VS Code Restart VS Code Sign back in using the same GitHub account that owns your repos Reinstall GitHub Copilot and GitHub Copilot Chat extensions Copilot does not depend on which repositories you have access to—only on whether the signed-in GitHub account has Copilot enabled.
